Some have asked us why we chose to use the acronym, AELLA, to represent our organization. I actually came up with something similar to the word, which was short one letter from its current “AELLA” when I first named the group. I was struck by that acronym and couldn’t figure out why until I realized who Aella was in ancient Greek mythology. After learning what aella actually meant in some Latin languages from a friend, it became very clear that we had found what we were looking for without trying very hard at all. I showed the new acronym to Marla and she loved it for its feel, as well as its meaning.

Its several references, first and foremost, the fact that it roughly translates as “to her” in some languages, spoke to what we are all about. This endeavor is meant for the Earth and the term has an underlying feminine-strength. Aella was also a warrior-Amazon who battled Heracles in ancient Greek mythology. We wanted to generate the feeling of a powerful united mother Earth, ready to battle the Heracles of all negative impacts to the planet, that being, animal agriculture and the exploitation of life in general. These were the main contributing factors for selecting the acronym and it has great meaning to us. In unity, we fight for our mother. Let the Heracles step forward.

Artemis:

Stories about the Amazons in Greek mythology were conflicting. Some saw Amazons as individuals of great wisdom and strength, however, they were also vilified, extremely misunderstood, as well as oppressed(another good reason for choosing the AELLA acronym). The idea of free-thinking, self-sufficient women generally has the ability to cause unrest within the establishment. Original stories about Amazons being a socially advanced, highly intelligent, peaceful society, possessing the ability to defend and govern themselves, degraded over time within Greek mythos into stories of war-like, crazed women-hunters who would murder a man before he had the chance to draw his sword, or even ask questions.

The truth of the matter is that the goddess of the Amazons, Artemis(depicted above in stone), was originally worshiped as the patron of all animals(later, that was corrupted and changed into the patron of hunters). The Amazons’ great strength and health was quite actually, always attributed to vegetarianism and specific usages of licorice.

UTAH RESIDENTS: – Representative John Mathis(R), has labelled animal rights activist whistle-blowers as “animal-rights terrorists” for taking videos or photos on farmers’ property without permission in order to expose cruelty to animals. Of course, Mathis is himself, a part-time farmer and fears that the media garnered by activists is aimed at destroying the agriculture industry.

First of all, if there is nothing wrong with abusing animals and the industry has nothing else to hide, why are you attempting to shroud the actions taking place in said industry, Mr. Congressman? Secondly, how do you equate an act of compassion for another life-form with “terrorism”? Is it because such an act may have the capacity to cost you money?

“There are groups with the stated purpose to do away with animal agriculture, and that’s egregious — that’s egregious to me,” Mathis told legislators this week. “The animal welfare movement has become an animal rights movement, and that’s wrong.”

Actually Congressman Mathis, the animal welfare movement is somewhat far from where our ideology rests in the animal rights movement. The animal welfare movement simply wishes you to treat animals with some amount of respect, whereas, we in the animal rights movement, do indeed wish to undermine the animal agriculture industry by exposing said industry for what it is. It might behoove you to learn the difference between the two. Just a suggestion, Congressman.

Mathis’ bill, HB187, would make “agricultural operation interference” a crime, a class A misdemeanor on the first offense, a third-degree felony for the second offense.

Again, this is no different than any other animal agriculture endeavor geared toward hiding the horrific activities that occur on a regular basis in the industry. Why try to hide so vehemently, that which you stand by so staunchly? Why are you so afraid that undercover footage will “destroy the industry”, Congressman Mathis?

Utah residents, We seriously encourage you to contact your local representatives HERE, both in the Senate and House, telling them that you do not accept the idea of criminalizing undercover footage of farm procedures in an effort to satiate industries and silence truth. The general public has every right to know what goes on behind closed doors in farming procedures and representatives in both Congress, as well as the Senate, have no business attempting to remove such rights from citizens. Legislators have gone too far, pressing the agenda of suppressing the rights of citizens, whilst ignoring the NEEDS of citizens.

We can not, not in any fashion, understand how, in the United States of America, certain legislators are getting away with proposing such heinous travesties. Thus far, committee has voted 10-3 to move the measure forward to a vote in the entire House. This bill can move no further. Please sign the Care2 petition against this improper legislation HERE!

The decisions that you make in raising your fork from your plate today, will have a drastic impact upon all future human posterity, as well as the animals who suffered for your meal. The majority of animal rights and vegan activists do indeed, care about your children, no matter how poorly you wish to paint a picture of us, or refer to us as “elitist” for our true concern in regard to life. We do not hate you, nor do we hate your children. We are no better than you for the reason that we do not consume products that were garnered from animals. We are human, just like you. This means that we are flawed, just like you.

Those of us who have simply taken time to research the many angles of information currently available as it pertains to life on this planet, can be led to only one logical conclusion about themselves. My feelings in regard to this are not much of a secret. They can be stated in one simple sentence and I do hope that the majority in the vegan community will agree with me: “The Earth and the continuance of all current or future life on her, matters much more than I do.” I live my life by that precise sentiment.

This is the reason why no matter what happens to me, I will never stop doing what I do. No matter how hard I am knocked down, you will see me stand again and you will never be fully rid of me. My life is a small speck in the grand scheme and nothing that I must endure, in order serve truth at your table in place of the lies that you are currently being fed by the establishment, will ever stop me.

No, I have no delusions of grandeur. I do not believe that I will turn all of you to veganism in my lifetime. I am one ordinary man who is simply trying to impress a more positive mark on this world before I leave, than existed when I entered it. My objective is to make the lives of those who come after me, a bit easier. Their world will not be as pleasant as the one we now live in, because of the current choices that exist on your plate. It is for this very reason, that the entire movement for positive change will continue working to reach you for the betterment of humanity’s future, including the future of your grandchildren.

Taken from the “Capitol Digest”:

The FARM FACILITY FRAUD ACT: The Iowa Senate opened debate on a measure seeking to create a crime of “agricultural production facility fraud” for anyone who obtains employment or access to a farm or food-processing operation under false pretenses with the intent to commit an act not authorized by the owner, such as secretly filming livestock-related activities in hopes of disparaging the industry’s image.

However, the measure was deferred to give time for senators who oppose or favor the changes to House File 589 to draft amendments to the controversial legislation.

In his opening remarks, Senator Joe Seng, D-Davenport, the bill’s floor manager, praised agriculture as the bright spot in Iowa’s economy and an industry worthy of protecting.

“There are groups with extreme agendas trying to distort America’s view of just common agricultural practices. I hope today that the Senate will stand up and support agriculture,” he said.

Meanwhile, groups opposed to the measure began to line up against Senate passage. Randall Wilson, legal director for the ACLU of Iowa, said the new approach to the “Ag Gag bill” is to now seek to “criminalize only the use of undercover informants and reporters to investigate the practices of animal and agricultural production facilities.”

He said the changes represented a “small improvement” over the House-passed version, but still targets investigative undercover reporting and whistle-blowing activities by inviting criminal prosecution at public expense against news organizations that “harbor” whistle-blowers and undercover informants by refusing to identify their sources.

Adam Mason, political director of the Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund, urged the Iowa Senate to stand with everyday people and the environment over corporate agribusiness and factory farm polluters by dropping plans to debate the amended H.F. 589 measure this session.

From Occupy For Animals ~ Every year, at a village near Hanoi, a pig is brutally chopped into two so that people can smear banknotes with its blood in the belief that it would bring luck.

Thousands of people from the village and nearby villages will gather to smear the blood of the pig on their banknotes in the belief that it would bring luck in the new year. The festival is known as the most brutal in the country and is condemned by many, including some who called on the government to stop the festival.

Protest letter
to the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam:

To whom it may concern

I wish to express my deep concern about animal cruelty being conducted in the name of tradition in Vietnam.

On 28th of January 2012 – like every year – citizens at Nem Thuong village have celebrated their cruel festival during which a pig is brutally chopped into two. Every year, thousands of people from the village and nearby villages gather to smear the blood of the pig on their banknotes in the belief that it would bring luck in the new year. The festival is known as the most brutal in your country and is condemned by many, including some who called already on your government to stop the festival.

No one can adequately explain why these practices are carried out year after year – except to say they are “traditional”. This however is not a valid argument to continue these practices.

I urge the Government of Vietnam to abolish the above practice for the following reasons:

1. It hurts the animals – contrary to what many believe, animals suffer tremendously before and during such festivals.

2. It hurts us – cruelty against animals harms society as a whole; it signals and normalizes insensitivity in children who can become numb to the suffering of living beings. It is also known to influence certain people to commit violence to other humans.

3. It is bad for tourism – as tourists are abhorred by such practices, the festival will have an adverse effect on tourism, an industry which provides the country with much-needed financial returns. Those foreigners who experience or come to know of this practice leave Vietnam confused and with a heavy heart, rather than uplifted by its paradoxical beauty and friendliness.
I implore you to end these violent practice and help Vietnam move

towards a truly peaceful country in keeping with its international image.

I trust that you will support these measures (which are becoming more widespread around the world) and thus promote non-violent cultural practices in Vietnam. Until such a time, however, I regret that it will be necessary to boycott Vietnam both as a tourist and by way of commerce and to encourage others to participate in a boycott as well.

Yours sincerely,
(your name here)

INSTRUCTIONS:
Please copy and paste the above text and send it to the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam using their contact form on their website HERE.

Many people promote “free-range” animal agriculture as being “better” for animals, humans and the planet than factory farming. I have heard owners/operators of such farms claim that animals are not abused on “free range” farms(even though they are enslaved and killed) and that they are even “beneficial” to the environment. Having attempted to truly listen to such nonsense, I think that I have some valid questions for everyone in a hypothetical format. Let us then, go with the assumption that every animal being exploited in agriculture to sustain the industry today, will be moved off of factory farms or “big farms” and placed on “free-range” farms or, as some people like to refer to them, “small farms”.

Question #1: Assuming that the same number of human beings are consuming animal products, is it safe to say that the same number of animals will be required to sustain the animal agriculture industry, whether they are in factory farms or roaming about on uncle Jeb’s ranch?

Question #2: If the 53 billion animals that we slaughter each year are moved from factory farms or “big farms” and placed on “free-range” farms or “small farms”, what do we now call the “small farms”? Will they be called “big small farms”?

Question #3: If the 53 billion animals that we slaughter each year are moved from factory farms or “big farms” and placed on “free-range” farms or “small farms”(which we will now refer to as “big small farms”), where will all of the extra land to keep them come from? We are talking about well over 50 billion animals here.

Question #4: In regard to the egg industry, what would we be doing with all the “surplus” male chicks? How would it be any different than what we do with them now by grinding them up by the hundred thousands daily, into pink sludge on factory farms, considering that the “small farms” are now “big small farms” and have the demand that factory farms once supplied?

Question #5: In order to keep up with said demand for flesh and lactation products, do you honestly believe that “big small farms” will not be fully utilizing antibiotics, growth hormones, etc… just like big factory farms do?

Question #6: When all animals are moved from factory farms to “big small farms”, will we no longer have a requirement to mutilate animals so that they do not harm one another before we murder them or will we have the same problems regarding space that factory farms do?

Question #7: Will animal agriculture negatively impact the rain forests through deforestation any less than its current hold on 80%, even though we are still feeding the same number of animals on our new “big small farms” by shredding said rain forests to grow grain on their fertile lands?

Question #8: Will we still be required to grind up countless fish species and add it to “livestock” feed, or will this magically change because we are enslaving the animals outside, instead of in factory farms?

Question #9: Will our new “big small farms” impact our fresh water “resources” any less, even though we are still quenching the thirst of the same number of animals that we did on factory farms? Will the animals on “big small farms” still be contaminating the water supplies of the land around them with their waste product? Considering that the same number of animals will be utilized and exploited on “big small farms” as there were on factory farms, what will be ecologically “better”? Are the buildings that factory farms utilize generating the current ecologic waste, or are the animals that we enslave?

Question #10: Do you still believe that our new “big small farms” are any better than factory farms or that they are the answer to the problem?

For those of you who still eat meat/dairy products, are lax in recycling, forget your eco-friendly bags when shopping, drive ridiculous petroleum-guzzling vehicles and purchase items that are harmful to the planet in general without a care in the world: I know that you are concerned in regard to your children’s future and I know that you do not want to condemn them to witness a dying Earth. Please consider listening to we people, whom you tend label as “new-age nut-cases”, “peace-loving hippies”, crazy vegan environmental and animal rights activist “tree-huggers” or, as some corporate/political circles like to refer to us…”terrorists”.

First and foremost, I would like to point out that we aren’t doing what we do for our own posterity, alone, you realize? It would be safe to say that the majority of us are not arguing with you on a daily basis because we enjoy doing so. I am fairly certain that most of us would rather be blissfully engaged in our lives, instead, however, you make that extremely difficult for us. Try to consider that the decisions you make today are severely affecting the future of both your posterity, as well as our own. We do have every right to be heard and our actions reflect that of the truly concerned, not that of “terrorists”.

The common definition of terrorism refers to violent acts intended to create fear, are perpetrated for religious, political or ideological goals and deliberately target or disregard the safety of citizens. That is not what any of us are about. I would say that the common definition of an activist refers to someone that generates acts intended to create an expanded level of compassion toward the plight of others(or animals, or the planet, or a historic site, etc…), stands staunchly for equal rights, pressures political ideologies to defend those rights and deliberately attempts to raise awareness among citizens.

Is it any real wonder why corporate-funded government is attempting to silence us with unconstitutional legislation like the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act and ridiculous accusations? If you are still wondering why, allow me to “break it down” for you, succinctly. It is all related to one simple factor; when YOU listen to what we have to say, WE cause them to lose MONEY. There is no “conspiracy theory” here. All of you full well realize that we live in a society of capital. Everything is ruled by it, in specific, world governments, and none more so, than the United States government. When you stop buying, they get upset and quite frankly, we are not sorry for causing their grief or the “lightness” in their pockets…it is just that simple.

Corporations do pay for what we digest in the media, telling us what to believe. Corporations do fund political campaigns, in order to ensure who seats in office, making our decisions for us. Corporations do write policy in regard to what is and is not allowed in commerce, determining what we can buy or sell. Corporations, do indeed control what bills are proposed on the House and Senate floor, quite a number of which in recent years, have been geared toward unconstitutionally invading the rights of United States citizens. Corporations do dictate what environmental and animal protections are lifted, so that they can continue to make more money at the expense of human posterity. Corporate policy has, does and will continue to lead to the deaths of countless lives, both human and non-human. All of you already know this.

The United States Constitution continues to be dissected in favor of silencing we who speak out against the heinous dealings in the corporate scheme, even being stretched so far as to call us “terrorists”. They want activists to shut the hell up, so that they can continue on “business as usual”, as the world crumbles about the feet of our children’s futures. It is my understanding that the Constitution of the United States of America exists to serve the people, not corporations, who are currently shaping and molding that Constitution, in an effort to have the people serve their interests. I would like your personal opinion in regard to who the real terrorists in this equation actually are? With state Senators like Florida’s Jim Norman drafting bills at the request of agricultural-corporate sponsors like Wilton Simpson of Simpson Farms(Pasco County, Florida producer of over 20 million eggs, annually) in an effort to criminalize as a felony, the undercover documentation of farming procedures, the answer to that question becomes blatantly obvious.

The particular bill, along with several others in states like New York, Iowa and Minnesota, were shot down last year by public opinion, labelled as “Ag-Gag” legislation. Senator Norman’s initial excuse for introducing the bill was that it was intended to stop intellectual property theft. However, during an interview, when asked to cite an example of such theft, he was unable to offer one. The Florida Farm Bureau eventually admitted that the bill was drafted to prevent the kind of negative exposure that animal rights activists generate, which is detrimental to their operations. Undercover footage produced by numerous vegan and animal rights organizations have proven very costly to the animal agriculture industry.

So, in a continued effort to silence us, these unconstitutional travesties will be reintroduced this year in a number of states. Some of them may be “masked” within wording, hidden neatly in agricultural “package” bills. Others will remain as blatant as the sun in the sky. It matters not in which form they find themselves on the floor of any state’s legislative office. What matters is that the average United States citizen continues to stand against them. Please consider that after they have stripped away our right to speak for the voiceless, who will be left to speak up for you when they come for your rights?

More than refusal to believe, it is not my personal opinion that human beings are inherently “terrible” creatures. I also do not subscribe to the ideology which states that meat and dairy consumers or slaughterhouse workers are “evil”, either. There is little point in viewing meat and dairy consumers as the “enemy”, when clearly, they are not only pawns in the corporate scheme, but they are precisely the individuals that we need to reach. If there is any hope for the future of all life on this planet, especially that of human posterity, it is with the meat and dairy consuming masses waking from their apathetic coma.

As environmental and animal rights activists, the war that we are currently engaged in, is obviously an information war. Whom do you really believe needs to hear the messages that we are self-decidedly charged to provide? Explaining to vegans why people in the world need to go vegan, patting one another on the back at animal rights conferences and developing vegan communes isn’t going to change very much, now is it? The world will not become vegan simply because we want it to be so, whilst we spout anger at non-vegans. This is an uphill battle that will likely last generations, assuming that the human race actually has many generations left on this planet.

It is quite unfortunate that at the present stage of this information war, the greatest enemy of life has all the ammunition. They have the money, they have the media and they have powerful legislators snugly in their pockets. Induced apathy and societal propaganda are powerful corporate allies, both of which, are well fed by industries like animal agriculture. Seeing as “ignorance is bliss”, so to speak, it is simply easier for most people to accept what the current capital-based regime is peddling. The human condition will quickly sell out on truth to the corporate scheme for feel-good excuses, which exist to inform people that what they are doing, no matter how destructive, is indeed, “okay” or “acceptable”, effectively enabling them to continue in a “business as usual” manner without any remorse for their actions. Again, it is still my personal opinion that most humans are simply afraid, in a state of hopelessness, numb or oblivious, not inherently “bad”.

Obviously, I also believe that it is quite impossible to teach a human being that it is “acceptable” to kill anything, then expect that human being to personally place real value upon life. It is simply not logical to reach the conclusion that we can train someone to slaughter pigs each day, yet retain any true amount of respect for an animal. It is also quite shocking to hear many of the sentiments expressed by average citizens, pertaining to the loss of human children to starvation all over the world each day. There is indeed, a tangible level of “acceptance”, even to the point of “expectancy” in reply to the information. It is no coincidence that the current capital “machine” thrives on and encourages human apathy, even in regard to the extensive loss of human lives. This is, of course, all part of the plan. It is much easier for a nation to bomb another country for political positioning or its “resources” in future campaigns, when said nation’s citizens have been lulled so far into apathetic ruin to give a damn, is it not?

There is high merit in many of the writings and ideas put forward by great minds throughout history which state that whilst humans consume animal products, there will always be conflict among us. This philosophy actually becomes more realistically pronounced, the greater that human population expands. It is already, an undeniable environmental reality. Animal agriculture employed by such an inordinate number of human beings who now occupy this planet, has led to extreme ecologic degradation. It does indeed, as Socrates suggested to his students nearly two and one-half millennia ago, promote the corporate seizure and destruction of fertile lands in order to grow more grain, to feed animals that we label as “livestock”. This sobering reality has, countless times in the past, continues to and will ultimately lead to the forced displacement of indigenous peoples from their home lands. It will also continue to lead to war between nations over what we label as dwindling “resources” and it is only going to get worse as time moves forward.

It should be evident that if humanity is fighting over “resources” today, whilst allowing even humans to die of starvation and devastating the planet in the process, we sincerely need to alter our values. It requires that we begin to question what the future will hold. The only logical conclusion that can be reached points to the Earth having an exponentially greater number in human population, all vying for far less “resources” than we have available today, in the very near future. How valuable will a human life be in this future and on our current path, considering that the the loss of 18,000 children who died of starvation on the planet today is considered to be an “acceptable” statistic based on global “resource” consumption?

This is the version of capitalist structure that we live under at the present time, which is completely short-sighted, only concerned with growth, profit for itself and it has a great deal of control over what the average human being digests on an informational level. This is the real enemy of life and everything that activists hold dear, so try to consider that the enemy is not within the masses. They are merely “pawns” in the corporate chess match, along with the 18,000 children who died of starvation today. Everything that they hear is propaganda geared to induce “acceptance” and eventually, the path that corporate rule is leading humanity along, will end with the extinction of our species. In essence, the more that humanity grows through its animal product consumption, the more war, famine, environmental devastation and death we will surely see.

The road to hope for all life does not run directly through the general meat and dairy consuming masses, it runs along side them. As animal rights and environmental activists, we can not be like the 300 Spartan soldiers who gave their lives at the pass of Thermopylae for their country. In reality, if we were to wage actual war against all meat and dairy consumers in this regard, our numbers would be more closely equivalent to one soldier against the entire Persian army. Besides, it was not only 300 Spartan warriors who died at Thermopylae. Thousands of Greek citizens laid down their lives during those battles through August and September of 480 BC, no matter what movies tell you. Regardless, countless plant and animal species which fall to extinction each year, do not have the luxury of our acceptance in personal failure. We are not merely fighting against tyrannous rule or for our families and countrymen to have a certain level of freedom. We are fighting for the right of life to continue. Our war is waged for the posterity of all life on Earth.

Again, this is an information war and it must be fought in the arena that humanity has allowed the corporate scheme to generate around us. I firmly believe that when a human being fully accepts the realities surrounding him or herself, changes in a positive direction generally begin to occur. It is, for this reason, that I endeavor to see the masses as “sleeping allies”, rather than enemies. It is difficult to view them as enemies, whilst money holds a patent on “truth” in mainstream ideology. As individuals who have the ability to peer through the tapestry of utter fallacy woven by the powers that be, we have a responsibility to help the general public see. After all is said and done, the road to hope for all life on Earth can only be paved with the mortar of their awakening from silent slumber, so that they might one day, fight beside us.
